My travels inspired this set of 4 pieces to East Africa, where I met the Maasai people.
My Experience The Maasai (/ˈmɑːsaɪ, mɑːˈsaɪ/) live in Tanzania and Kenya, and I had the lovely opportunity to visit them in Tanzania.
I was always curious to meet the Maasai people and learn about their unique culture. As I wandered through their villages,
I was struck by the beauty of the women carrying bags and jerricans on their heads. They seemed so graceful and strong in the sunset light.
In just a few days, I created four beautiful pieces of art that captured the spirit of the Maasai women.
Who Are the Maasai?
The Maasai people live in the northern, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania.
They are among the best-known local populations of East Africa due to the fact that they live near the game parks of the African Great Lakes. They also have a very distinctive custom and dress. The Maasai speak the Maa language and are members of the Nilotic language family. They live in mud huts called Manyattas and live the traditional life their ancestors did.
There are over 1 million Maasai’s living in Kenya. The Maasai Women African Maasai people and culture are captivating. Their women are an integral part of it, and they are known for their brightly colored clothes and beaded jewelry. The African Maasai women are responsible for fetching water and firewood, caring for the children, and cooking.
The Maasai men are excellent hunters and often go on solo hunts to provide food for their families. African Maasai culture is very traditional, and the women play a vital role in keeping it alive.
The Maasai people love to host visitors in their villages, and they offer beaded jewelry made by the women for sale as souvenirs.
